What is a Lactation Consultant?

Posted on February 28th, 2013 by | 4 views

What is a Lactation Consultant or Educator?

Believe it or not, breastfeeding does not always come so easily to a mother and her newborn. Some babies actually have to be taught how to breastfeed! It is at these times that a lactation consultant or a lactation educator comes in quite handy. When breastfeeding difficulties arise, they can help ease almost any problem or pain, and teach baby and mother how to work together more efficiently. Utilizing the expertise of a lactation consultant can also help a mother to continue breastfeeding at times when it may seem to be too difficult to continue, or if it seems hard to produce enough milk to satisfy the baby’s needs, and to therefore avoid having to substitute with formula. A mother’s breast milk is by far the most optimal, nutritious choice of supplementation for a newborn baby, and mom should try her absolute best to keep her baby on breast milk for at least up to a year.

If breastfeeding is not possible for one reason or another, it is important to stay positive and research your options in supplementation. There are a few options besides formula, such as wet nurses, milk banks, even home-made substitutes. Some lactation consultants are also knowledgeable in these different types of supplementation and may be able to assist even when breastfeeding has failed. When to Seek Help from a Lactation Consultant

If a mother or her baby’s doctor suspects that her baby is not receiving enough supplementation from the breast, if her baby is not gaining weight as expected, or if nursing the baby is painful for the mother, then it may be a good idea to get help from a lactation consultant.
