The Therapeutic Benefits of Quality Essential Oils

I began using doTERRA essential oils when my son was a baby. My husband and I were looking for natural remedies that were effective, safe, wouldn't require an extensive education in proper use and were reasonably priced. Reading the extensive list of possible side effects, I knew that I didn't want to use over the counter drugs when my son got sick. I came down with the flu in December 2010 and coincidentally received an invitation to an essential oils class at the same time. Desperate to try anything to keep my little one from catching the flu, I asked if I could attend the class while I was ill and was happily received. I was completely dumbfounded when I left that class feeling at least fifty-percent better, and was well the following day. I was amazed that neither my son or husband got sick. How had I gone my whole life without using these oils?

Being a cultural anthropologist who is married to a toxicologist, we began our research on why these oils were so effective. We found that essential oils of this quality have been a rarity up until this point. There is no FDA or USDA regulation on the labeling of essential oils, so it is very difficult to know if what you see on an essential oil label is accurate. It can also be difficult to determine the product's purity or if it is even derived from a plant at all. doTERRA was started when the owners saw a growing need in our society and around the world for a natural, easy to use and safe product to treat our steadily increasing number of ailments. After seeing how effective essential oils were at empowering so many people to take charge of their own health, doTERRA's goal was to fill the void of a truly pure product in the market.

The medicinal properties of a plant can vary drastically depending on how and where it is grown. For example, lavender is very easy to grow and smells fantastic. However, when the plant is taken out of it's indigenous soil in the high altitudes of France, the chemical properties become altered which can dramatically compromise its medicinal value. Our oils are sourced from plants grown in their indigenous soil by growers all over the world that do not use any kind of chemical, pesticide, or anything else that could contaminate the purity of the oil. Once imported into the US they are cross tested in third party labs using both mass spectrometry and gas chromatography, meaning they are extensively tested before placement of the "100% Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade" seal. In fact, most of doTERRA oils are safe for internal consumption, safe for topical use on infants and children, and even during pregnancy.

So here I am two years after my initial introduction to doTERRA oils; never having anticipated growing a business out of it, and absolutely loving what I do! I am a passionate advocate for natural birth and childcare, and what a privilege it is to be able to provide so many parents with this amazing tool that can be used through pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum, infant and child care.

Here is a list of what I think are the top ten oils to have on hand that can help with nearly any issue.

Lavender - aside from the relaxing and calming properties that it is well known for, it is amazing in relieving pain and blistering from burns. It works as a natural antihistamine on skin reactions or bug bites. I put a drop behind each ear on my son nightly to help calm him for bed and to prevent ear infections as it has powerful anti-infectious properties.

Lemon - put a drop or two every day in your water to cleanse your organs and lymphatic system and keep your body acid free (alkaline), plus it’s delicious! It is excellent for sore throats– just place a drop on your tongue or gargle with lemon water. You can also use it as a cleaning agent, it will kill ninety-nine percent of bacteria.

Peppermint - drops a fever in no time. It is very energizing, add one drop to tea or coffee in the morning or afternoon for a extra pick-me-up. Also great for headaches when placed on the temples or back of the neck.

Meleleuca (Tea Tree) - an amazing disinfectant, great for cleaning. Anti-fungal, perfect for athlete’s foot. A superb antibacterial, great for acne when placed topically or getting rid of ear infections by placing a drop on a cotton ball in the ear (never pour oils directly into the ear).

Frankincense - my favorite oil because of it’s incredibly gentle anti-inflammatory properties. Take internally for aches and pains, apply topically to any injury or swelling, I put it on any bump, scrape, or bruise my son may incur in combination with lavender. It is also becoming well known for it’s anti-carcinogenic properties when used topically or internally.

Oregano - the mega anti-viral. I take it at the first sign of a cold, add it to the blend of oils I rub on my family’s feet at night, and occasionally cook with it. Always dilute this oil or take it in a gel capsule on a full stomach, it is so strong it can burn if not combined with a carrier oil (i.e. coconut, olive, or almond oil).

On Guard - our protective blend and our most researched blend due to it’s effectiveness in killing MRSA (antibiotic resistant staph infection). It kills 99.99% of harmful viruses and bacteria. It is great for diffusing and can put on the bottom of feet as a preventive measure, I also like to put a few drops in my soap dispensers around the house.

Breathe - the respiratory blend, great for asthma patients and a must have during cold and flu season to clear up chest and sinus congestion. As opposed to other rubs that may help open airways, it actually kills the infection in the process. It also helps open airways to stop snoring when placed on the bridge of the nose.

DigestZen - this blend works for every digestive disorder, constipation, diarrhea, IBS, heartburn, bacterial infections, parasites. This is my number one blend during pregnancy and infancy, having used it personally for both, I keep it handy at all times. It is great for morning sickness, indigestion and babies with gas or reflux.

Deep Blue - relieves muscular and joint pain and reduces inflammation. It can be used for headaches, back aches or posterior pelvic pain during pregnancy and labor.
