It’s Time To Make Vitamin D Your Priority

Posted on January 23rd, 2013 by | 2 views

As a mother, I worry about the health of my family. I feel overwhelmed at the amount of information out there and understand why so many miss out on learning about the best ways to take care of themselves and the people they love. As a nutritionist, my passion is helping pregnant women and children improve their health through food and nutrients, and believe that education about healthy living is paramount. My name is Vanessa Wells and I am a volunteer Education Advocate for GrassrootsHealth and the Protect Our Children NOW! campaign and the owner of True Nature Nutrition. I am passionate about educating pregnant women and families about healthy eating, so that our children get the best start in life.

My family and I recently moved back to the States. I spent the previous three years living and studying in New Zealand, and got the opportunity to work on research about preschool children and Vitamin D deficiency. I felt like my eyes were opened to a whole world I knew nothing about. The integral role that Vitamin D plays in SO many body functions was astounding, as are the risks that so many young preschoolers are under by not getting enough. This motivated me to learn more and drives me to help in any way I can.

Vitamin D plays a vital role in calcium absorption, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It has a huge role to play in an overwhelming number of physiological processes. Adequate Vitamin D levels can lead to a 50% reduction in influenza rates in children, an 80% reduced risk of type 1 diabetes, an 83% reduction in breast cancer risk, and a 50% reduction in preterm labor and other complications in pregnancy. And the list goes on. This year, 4400 babies will be born premature here in San Diego. Those babies go on to have much higher risks of developing cerebral palsy, mental impairment and permanent hearing loss among other disorders. 50% of such cases could be prevented with a Vitamin D screening and supplementation program in place for pregnant women, such as the Protect Our Children NOW! program. Such a program could equal a savings of $120MM in the cost of health care, just for San Diego. Imagine the impact of nationwide implementation.

Ideal blood levels of Vitamin D are between 40-60 ng/ml, and chances are you aren’t getting enough. Do you know what your blood levels are? I didn’t. It’s never mentioned at the doctor’s office and I never heard a word about it during my pregnancy. Being pregnant during the winter, having olive skin, and working a desk job all contributed to the fact that I was lacking the appropriate amount of Vitamin D.

Even here in sunny San Diego, indoor lifestyles, sunscreen use, and a number of other factors lead to Vitamin D deficiency. Your daily moisturizer probably has enough sunblock in it to ensure that you don’t get enough UV exposure on a regular basis. Add to that the cold winter, and the lack of Vitamin D in food sources, and you are probably pretty deficient.

That’s why it’s so important that you learn more. Not only for yourself, but so that you can help your friends and family, and spread the message about Vitamin D to others. GrassrootsHealth is hosting a webinar onVitamin D for pregnancy and breastfeeding where you can learn all about this topic, and get all your questions answered (details are below).

I also ask that you help get the Protect Our Children NOW! off the ground here in San Diego. $350,000 is needed for this three year study to make Vitamin D screening an integral part of pregnancy care. Your Natural Baby Fair, an annual event here in San Diego, has chosen to support GrassrootsHealth this year through their online auction, the proceeds of which will go towards launching the Protect Our Children NOW! program.  Donate a product or service to Your Natural Baby Fair’s nation-wide auction and help support this program, which could save the lives of countless in the future. I need you to help make Vitamin D a priority in family health. Click here to learn more about this important program. You can donate online at:
