Cravings, Cravings, Cravings...

Posted on January 23rd, 2013 by | 1 views

Ice cream and pickles…steak and chocolate…peanut butter and sardine sandwich…Pregnancy seems to bring out some pretty interesting cravings to say the least.  But did you know that craving salty or sweet foods is actually an indicator that you are experiencing adrenal fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue happens to many women during pregnancy as these organs in your body are working overtime to help your baby grow and develop.  You may notice yourself tired more often, especially around early afternoon, or not feeling rested even after a long night of sleep.  You may be experiencing changes in your digestion or symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.  You may feel that your emotions are overwhelming and your brain just can’t seem to focus and concentrate very well anymore.  All of these symptoms are indicators that your adrenals need a little support.

From conception until about 20 weeks, your growing baby is dependant on your adrenals for energy to grow.  It is essential during this phase that your adrenals are fully functioning to promote proper development for your baby.  After 20 weeks, adrenal fatigue in your system will actually draw on your baby’s energy, further compromising optimal growth.  Adrenal fatigue may explain why many babies are born with underdeveloped systems, predisposing them to being more fussy and uncomfortable in their first few months of life as their tiny bodies play catch up.

Supporting your adrenals throughout your pregnancy will greatly improve not only your energy and overall 40 week experience, but will also lend support to the development of your growing baby.  Although there are many products available for adrenal support, you’re probably asking, “which one is right for me?”  The best way to find out is to be tested on each product to find the perfect fit and dose for your body.  If you’re interested in learning more or being tested on products, contact our board certified doctor.
