Natural Baby Pros had the opportunity to ask Maggie a few questions about her work and inspiration.  Take some time to read below, and THEN take advantage of her special offer for Childbirth Preparation classes and Placenta Encapsulation services (see below)!!!

1. What is your relationship to fertility, pregnancy, birth, and/or mommy/baby care, and how does your work relate to it?

I am here to assist mothers (and their support people!) as they journey through pregnancy to birth and new mommyhood. I teach childbirth classes, act as a doula through the birthing process, and also provide breastfeeding and newborn care support.

2. What inspired you to do the work you do?

I love birth. I think it is such a transforming experience - truly a bridge to motherhood. With my first two children, I really didn't understand what a difference trained support could make. I had read all the books, took a weekend workshop, discussed options with my husband, and just went in to the hospital wanting a natural birth. I did succeed with that natural birth, but (other than the final outcome) I wouldn't call it a particularly wonderful experience. My third birth was amazingly different, and I attribute that to all of the things I know now that I didn't know before - things that I share during my childbirth classes and workshops, as well as with my doula clients.

When all is said and done though, the look on the face of a mother when she sees her baby for the first time is priceless - it is truly inspiring to see! There is no better job!

3. What is the most important thing a pregnant woman or a woman trying to conceive should know about her body, giving birth, and caring for herself and her baby, based on your personal and professional experience?

Your instincts are nearly always right - your instincts to birth, your instincts to parent. Listen to them.

4. What is your biggest obstacle in supporting pregnant or trying-to-conceive women and/or babies?

The media!! I talk about it a lot, and it truly is a HUGE obstacle. The television, movies, celebrities, and so on are NOT the place to get information. Drama sells, but it's not the norm - I'm constantly reminding my clients of this!

5. Tell me your best success story.

Ooh! My favorite birth this year was with an awesome couple who also took my Lamazechildbirth ed series. The mom wasn't against an epidural - in fact, she was expecting to ask for one, although she said she would be excited to have an unmedicated birth. During our classes, I used some "Birthing From Within" excercises, including an exercise which emphasized the difference between childbirth pain and suffering - I had moms assign a number to what they imagine their most intense moment in childbirth would be and working with that number. Once her labor began, she coped wonderfully - her husband was so encouraging and supportive - and I tried to be "behind the scenes," providing physical support and suggestions, while he spoke quietly to her and stroked her hair. She ended up having an all natural, beautiful birth - and twenty minutes after their son was born, she turned to me and said that every time she started doubting herself, she remembered her number. And each time, she knew she could do it for a few more contractions. She was so proud of herself (as were we all!), and I LOVED that she had recalled that exercise from our class and it had been such a help!
